Why is sharing carbon data so hard? The Carbon Accounting Alliance launches an industry survey to find out!
• The ‘Enabling Carbon Data Sharing’ survey has already attracted responses from 100+ organisations.
• 97% of respondents so far are in favour of introducing software interoperability between carbon accounting platforms.
Thursday 13th November: The Carbon Accounting Alliance (CAA) are delighted to announce that the Enabling Carbon Data Sharing Survey is now live, already attracting responses from 100+ organisations. Led by the CAA’s Software Interoperability Working Group, this cross-industry initiative aims to identify barriers and perceptions around carbon data exchange to enable the potential for seamless, permissioned carbon data exchange.
Early insights from respondents highlight both the urgency and the opportunity:
• 97% are in favour of introducing software interoperability between carbon accounting platforms.
• 68% have at least occasionally faced challenges due to a lack of interoperability between datasets.
• The strongest interest in sharing data is to support supply chain collaboration.
• 87% consider that a recognised standard for soft interoperability would be valuable to their organisation when selecting a carbon platform.
The survey invites platform owners, users, consultants, auditors, and other stakeholders across the carbon accounting ecosystem to participate.
Rebecca Lardeur, Chair of the CAA’s Software Interoperability Working Group said, “Why can’t carbon accounting platforms share data with one another through a simple permissioning process, just as the ‘Open Banking Standard’ does for financial data?”
The CAA aims to make carbon data exchange straightforward, improving supply chain reporting, public disclosure, and access to green finance through automated, trustworthy data flows.
Survey results will inform the development of an initiative to unite carbon accountancy platforms behind a single set of best practices and policies for carbon data-sharing that enable scalable, reliable, and trusted climate disclosures globally.
The CAA will also be looking to collaborate with two or more carbon accounting platform providers on a pilot project in the coming months to demonstrate the benefits of interoperability.
